About Ortenburg Castle

We are very happy to have been invited to do a course at the stunning Ortenburg Castle. Ortenburg Castle is a very special place in Bavaria - especially for people who are interested in the Baroque. From 1120 to 1805 it was the residential palace of the Counts of Ortenburg, and because it was privately owned but not inhabited since 1827, one can almost speak of a “Sleeping Beauty Palace”. In its present form, it reflects the state of construction from the years 1562 to 1575, and apart from a few outbuildings, the castle and much of the interior has been completely preserved to this day.

Practical advice

The course in Ortenburg Castle is particularly small and fine, and takes places over one weekend. The participants arrive on Friday evening, play music fir the whole weekend and travel back home on Sunday afternoon.

The castle is located in a beautiful area about 2 hours by car or by train north-east of Munich - guests arriving by train can be picked up from Passau or Vishofen trainstations as required. Accommodation at the beautiful hotel “Zum Koch” (www.zumkoch.de - 3 km from the castle) is available for course participants for €60 per night, as well as a minibus shuttle to and from the castle.

At the hotel reception, guests collect their room keys and timetables. Each participant has an individual schedule in which they are assigned to various chamber music groups, lessons, or orchestral sessions from 9:00 a.m. to around 9:00 p.m. The groups are put together by the lecturers at an early stage, taking into account specific repertoire or ensemble requirements. An online portal, available up to 6 weeks before the course, allows participants to view their timetables, send questions or requests to the tutors, download the music and even contact their ensemble members (if desired) in advance. Between the sessions there are optional breaks for a walk in the forest, “Yoga for musicians” and the wonderful meals in the castle cellar.

What to expect

The first scheduled event is the dinner on Friday at 6:00 p.m. in the cozy “Schlosskeller” restaurant beside the castle. After the meal, and general announcements, we head over to the castle for a short concert given by the tutors, in the beautiful “Count’s Reception Hall”. At around 8:00 p.m., the first music-making begins with an orchestra session involving all the participants. Around 9:30 p.m., having satiated our musical appetite for the evening, we drive to the hotel (3km), to relax and chat over a glass of wine or beer on the charming hotel terrace.

The next morning, after breakfast in the hotel, we drive together to the castle and start at 9am., with 15 minutes of “gymnastics for musicians” led by Marion. The day continues tutor-led chamber music sessions and lessons. 12:30pm to 2:00pm is time for lunch at the wonderful little “Schlosskeller” restaurant and perhaps a wander around the beautiful Palace gardens.

From 2:00 p.m., the chamber music sessions and open Masterclasses continue until 6:30 p.m., when we convene for dinner again in the castle cellar and relax a bit. At 8:00 p.m. we meet again in the beautiful Count’s reception hall to rehearse our orchestra pieces. Around 21:30, we drive back to the hotel (3 km), and those who still have energy gather to relax and chat with a glass of wine or beer on the beautiful hotel terrace..

On Sunday, after breakfast in the hotel, rehearsals begin at 9 a.m. in the castle for the final concert, which takes place at 11:15 a.m. in the Count’s reception hall.
