Impressions

From the first moment at Armstorf, you sense this a very special place. People come here from all over Germany and Austria and even England – but what unities them all is a love for baroque chamber music. The excited anticipation to recreate the sounds of the 17th and 18th centuries – the sense of discovery and passion (that I sometimes miss in my professional encounters!), and the excited chatter in different accents and languages fills the beautiful rooms and gardens of the convent.

At reception the guests pick up their room keys and schedules. Every guest has an individualised schedule where they are assigned to different chamber music groups, gamba consorts and/or orchestra sessions, starting from 9 am and finishing around 9pm. The groups are organised by the teachers well in advance, taking into account any specific repertoire or ensemble wishes. An online portal available up to 6 weeks in advance of the course enables the participants to see their schedules, send any questions or requests to the teachers, download the music and even contact their fellow ensemble members (if wished!) in advance. In between the sessions, there are optional breaks for a walk in the woods, “yoga for musicians” sessions, as well as the wonderful meals, and traditional German “Coffee and Cake” at 3pm!

After the first welcome dinner (served by the wonderful nuns with salads and vegetables from their own garden) and announcements in the Refectory, the first music-making starts with an orchestra session lead by me, a flute ensemble-session with Marion, the gamba consort with Jakob and the lute jam-session with Axel. At about 9:30pm when we have sated our musical appetite for the evening, we all gather together to unwind and chat over glasses of wine or beer on the terrace, overlooking the huge convent garden, and beyond that, the rolling hills and forests of Armstorf and Dorfen.

Dusk finally turns to dark and as we start noticing the darting fireflies the enormous starlit night sky unfolding above us. We gradually drift out of reality and enter into the Armstorf bubble – a Realm where music, friendship and good food and drink are the essence of life – for the next four days!
